The Germanic-American Institute of St. Paul Minnesota offers the highest quality German instruction in the Twin Cities at affordable prices. Classes are taught in a friendly, intimate atmosphere (average class size is 10) by instructors who are native speakers or posses native-like fluency. All instructors are trained and experienced in the modern methodology of teaching German as a foreign language. We believe that learning a new language must be a highly-interactive, enjoyable experience that allows for continual integrated review and practice.

We offer two tracks of German instruction to best meet students’ goals and expectations.

Passwort Deutsch in an immersion-style curriculum that builds all four language skills, with the primary focus being oral proficiency. A good choice for those learning German for academic or professional reasons, or experienced foreign language learners. Levels 1-5

Content covered in each level of Passwort Deutsch can be found under Course Descriptions. On-line placement tests are available for students with prior German language knowledge or contact us for a personal recommendation.

Praktisch Deutsch is a course for those wanting to build a practical speaking proficiency in everyday German. The class moves at a learner-friendly pace and is less academic than Passwort Deutsch (= less grammar & homework). Praktisch Deutsch is a good choice for future tourists, seniors, those new to learning a foreign language, or anyone with limited time for outside studying. Levels 1-2

We also offer weekly Conversation Classes at the intermediate and advanced levels.

Class schedules, as well as dates for preparatory seminars and exams, are announced in our newsletter and posted on our web site. The GAI is an official testing center for Goethe Institut exams in the upper Midwest. For further information about any of our courses, contact the Director of Language Services Jeana Smith .

Our classrooms are located at 301 Summit Ave in St. Paul in the Language Services facility (former carriage house) behind the Germanic-American Institute. There is plenty of parking available for students in our parking lot or on Summit or Farrington Avenue.
