GAI Summer Language Camps 2010
Half-day, Full-Day, and Extended Care Options. Recommended ages: 6-12, except German Safari for children ages 5-8.
The 2010 GAI Summer Language Camp program for children will take place June 21-August 27. Each camp will last one week and be centered around a fun, highly-interactive theme. Beginners to bi-lingual campers welcome, as different activities will be developed according to children’s language skill level. Teachers and children will speak, hear, sing, and create in German while exploring subjects ranging from history and art to science and music.
The $125 ($150 non-members) enrollment fee includes all materials, costs, and daily healthy snacks.
Camp is held Monday - Friday from 9am-12pm. Additional options include:
- Early morning drop-off from 8-9AM ($15/week)
- Afternoon Kinderclub from 12:00-4:30PM ($75/week). During Kinderclub, children will continue to play, read, write, and interact in German.
- Extended care from 4:30-6PM ($25/week)
All of our camp instructors are professional German teachers with extensive training and experience in teaching German as a foreign language. The GAI is local, non-profit organization, committed to providing the highest quality German language instruction at affordable, family-friendly prices.
Camp #1: Exploring Science & the Planets
(June 21-25)
Explore the magic of the sky and the rhythms created by the orbit of sun, moon and the planets. What is a solstice, what an equinox? What about the huge clock in the sky, called the zodiac? We will hear stories about different constellations, create their pictures and enrich astronomic facts with songs, games and movement. The week will end with a cosmic celebration!
Camp #2: The Magical World of German Fairy Tales (July 5-9)
Come be part of the world of the Brothers Grimm. We will learn a variety authentic German Märchen (stories), each of which will provide each a daily magical theme. Games and crafts will include making gingerbread houses, stitching slippers, exploring nature, dancing to the sleeping beauty suite, and more!
Camp #3: Nature According to Bees (July 12-16)
Explore amazing facts about the life of honey bees, once considered sacred in ancient times. Learn about the organized tasks in a hive, revolving around one queen. Visit a beekeeper and help him with some chores. Artistic activities, creating a book, baking, and celebrating with games will all be part of this adventure.
Camp #4: A Slavic Fair from Yesteryear (July 19-23)
The Slavic fair is centuries’- old special event. You may take part as craftsmen who fabricates pottery or makes paper cuts and cross stitches. Or maybe you will be a talented painter working with color woodcuts, and the monks can teach you calligraphy using the old Cyrillic alphabet. The Cossacks will sing their marvelous songs, while young girls perform their beautiful dances, and wise women tell tales, stories and legends. Experience all of the trades while having fun learning German!
Camp #5: Egypt and the Land of Pharaohs
(August 2-6)
Spend a week in Ancient Egypt! Discover the secrets of the pyramids and the mummies, try writing hieroglyphs, learn more about Egyptian gods, visit the Egyptian salon of beauty, create Egyptian ornaments and play ancient Egyptian games. You will learn fascinating cultural and historical information through plenty of hands-on activities, crafts and games.
Camp #6: Pirates, Treasures, and Ocean Adventure (August 9-13)
We will travel back in time and experience first hand life at sea. Our week will include creating crafts such as secret treasure maps and pirate clothes, playing outside pirate games, cooking authentic sea fare, and learning old sailing songs. The week will end with a challenging treasure hunt and celebration.
Camp #7: Around the World in 5 Days (August 16-20)
Some people can do it in 80 days – we will do it in 5! While traveling around the world, we will learn a lot about every continent. During the journey we will dance ethnic dances, sing marvelous songs, create a variety of crafts, experience the animals, discover foreign languages and play authentic cultural games.
Camp #8: German Safari (August 23-27)
Discover the natural world auf Deutsch with plenty of hands-on activities! Make an animal mask and explore the grounds for prey, participate in an skit, sing Safari songs, or create a silly poem with your new vocabulary. This camp is a great choice for younger children and kids entering Twin Cities German Immersion School. Recommended ages 5-8.
