GAI Summer Language Camps 2011

Camp #1: Europareise
(A journey through Europe)

June 20 - 24

We will look at maps, pack our bags and start our European travels in Germany. Camp kids will learn about Europe's varied geography, rich cultural traditions, and diverse languages. A sample of activities includes map making, designing a passport to be stamped daily, and taking an imaginary train ride. At the end of the week the kids will have a suitcase and photo album full of memories from Europe.

 

 

Camp #2: Zauberberg und Wunderwald
(The magic mountain & enchanted forests)

June 27 - July 1

The magical world of elves, gnomes, and fairies has always fascinated people for centuries. We will unveil their secret world through Germanic mythology. During the week, kids will look for treasures of the Nibelungen, work with the Heinzelmännchen of Cologne and assist Baltic sailors as a Klabautermann sprite - all this with plenty of songs, crafts, games and an enchanted festival.

 

 

Camp #3: Die Umwelt und ich
(The environment and me)

July 11 - 15

Learn about the interactions between humans and their ecosystems and why it is important to protect the environment. Children will create crafts with recyclable materials, go on an outdoor environmental exploration, and participate in “green” activities, and much more.

 

 

Camp #4: Willkommen in Deutschland
(Welcome to Germany)

July 18 - 22

We invite you to spend the week in Germany. While traveling through the different regions, children may meet the famous pirate Klaus Störtebecker in Hamburg, sing along with the musicians of Bremen, visit a medieval festival, dance with the Hexen in Harz, and take a boat down Romantic Rhine. Activities will include traditional German songs, fairy tales, legends, cuisine, and games.

 

 

Camp #5: Sport und Spiele
(Fun with sports & games)

July 25 - 29

Have fun learning German through sports and games. Play high-energy outdoor sports including soccer and other team-oriented games. Additional fun will include German board games, card games, and other activities to help learn German.

 

 

Camp #6: Abenteuer im Mittelalter
(Adventures in the Middle Ages)

August 8 - 12

Go on an Adventure into the Middle Ages. The week will be filled with medieval games, crafts, dancing, music, and stories. You may learn a medieval trade, work as a farmer, or be king / queen for a day. The week will be filled with activities related to Medieval art and culture.

 

 

Camp #7: Ich mache Musik
(Fun with Music)

August 15 - 19

During the week, students will learn German folk songs, musical vocabulary in German, and become familiar with popular German singers and bands. Children will write their own songs to be recorded for a take home a CD and / or choose to choreograph their own dance to a German song. The week will culminate with a musical production showcasing the kids' talents and creations.

 

 

Camp #8: German Safari

August 22 - 26

Discover the natural world auf Deutsch with plenty of hands-on activities. Make an animal mask and explore the grounds for prey, participate in a silly skit, and sing German Safari songs while learning very basic German vocabulary. This camp is a great choice for younger children and kids entering Twin Cities German Immersion School. Recommended ages 5-8.
