Celebrate Deutsche Tage 2017!
Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11
Come share heritage and celebrate community at the 59th Annual Deutsche Tage. Deutsche Tage (which translates to German Days) is held every year on the second weekend in June on the GAI's beautiful Summit Avenue grounds. For the past 58 years we have shared the arts, traditions, and cuisine of the German-speaking world and inspired thousands of Minnesotans to discover new aspects of their heritage.
This year the GAI celebrates the 'musical melting pot' of German-speaking countries with our theme, Musik Allerlei, which translates to 'all types of music.'
We also have a special partnership this year with the Turkish American Association of Minnesota (TAAM) celebrating Turkish music & dance and Turkish influences in Germanic culture. The Turkish people are the largest ethnic minority in Germany, and Turkish Germans are the second largest Turkish population in the world (just after Turkey). Everything from Kaffeehaus culture to food to music in Germany has been influenced by Turkish culture.
We will celebrate the growing diversity of Germany and Minnesota at Deutsche Tage with Turkish music by Makam Baklava - which will perform modernized Turkish/Balkan music; traditional dance by the TAAM Folk Dancers; and a master class on the Baglama (also called the Saz) led by M.Orhan Ucer, leader of Makam Baklava.
Deutsche Tage attendees will also be able to purchase traditional Turkish food Saturday afternoon/evening only, including the Döner Kebab, Baklava (served in our Viennese Kaffeehaus), Ayran (a yogurt based drink), and Raki (a traditional Turkish liquor).
